Workshops, Science Shows and StarDomes for School Groups
Workshops
Worskhops are designed for students to have a hands-on experience with equipment provided by SciWorld. Sessions include a presenter to guide students through initial theory, then oversee students as they work in groups or independently. Workshops can be run in a classroom or hall with tables, and are suited to a maximum of 30 students.
Robotics with Lego NXT
90 minutes. Program your robot to move, sing, fetch a ball and interact with its environment. Work in teams to predict, test and evaluate. Robots, laptops and a programming session are provided by SciWorld in this 90 minute classroom activity that comes to your school. Ideal for primary Years 4 to 7, but also adaptable for older students. If you have Shockwave/Flash you can watch the 2:45 video here:
Weather for Year 3 to 7
90 minutes for up to 30 students. Hands-on weather and temperature measurement experiments including air, water, ice, wind, light and UV. Developed in conjunction with the Bureau of Meteorology www.bom.gov.au.
60 minutes. Discover how electricity travels and build some electric circuits including lights and sounds. Topics covered include electrons, conductors and insulators, open and closed circuits, series and parallel circuits, circuit diagrams, resistors and LEDs.
Electric Circuits for Years 4 to 7

Making Maths FUN! Download our Mathemania Flyer for details of the SciWorld Mathemania or SciWorld Mini Maths programs for schools.
Minimaths (R to Yr 2)
Find the missing marbles! Imagination, shapes, sorting, structures and problem solving in an interactive maths story. Sessions are recommended at 60 minutes for a maximum of 30 students.
Mathemania (Yrs 3 to 7)
90 minutes. Introduction to topography and binary, then students work in groups with puzzles involving numeracy, shape, logic and problem solving for visual and kinaesthetic learning styles.
Science Shows
Science Shows are for up to 70 students at a time to watch some experiments. Most sessions run for one hour and will require a space big enough for students to sit and watch, with at least 2 large tables, electricity, and running water close by.
I Want To Be A Scientist (R to Yr 2)
45 minutes. What is a scientist and what do they do? Explore some simple experiments that you can try at home or in your classroom, including an introduction to solids, liquids and gases. Maximum of 70 students.
Fire and Materials (Yrs 3 to 7)
Discover properties of materials and changes in solids, liquids, gases and plasma, and the ingredients of fire. Maximum of 70 students.
StarDome
The StarDome is a mobile inflatable planetarium. It is big enough for a class of 30 students and a supervising teacher to crawl inside and look at the stars in the night sky. Topics covered can include day and night, stars, planets, the solar system, galaxies, phases of the moon, seasons, light and constellations. Sessions are recommended at 45 minutes, but can be shortened or lengthened to suit school timetables and learning outcomes.
Please note: StarDomes require a space 7m x 7m and an unobstructed ceiling height of 3.5 metres. StarDome must be indoors with a powerpoint, and can be set up on carpet, lino, tiles or wooden floorboards.
Booking Requirements
When we come to your school we will need: a parking space for our van; a classroom where we can move the tables around (or a big room or hall for the StarDome or big shows); access to powerpoints (some shows also require water nearby); and some helpers to unload the equipment from the van. Setup time can vary from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on your choice of sessions.
Session costs are listed below. You can choose any combination for the day, subject to equipment availability. Your minimum daily booking fee is $300 for one presenter for one day (for example you will need to book at least 3 StarDome sessions, or 2 Robotics, to make 2 x $150 = $300 to meet the minimum daily booking of $300).
